Aideen Barry (*1979, Cork, Ireland) is a conceptual artist whose multifaceted practice encompasses filmmaking, performance, experimental lens-based media, drawing, and sculpture.
Balor’s Eye (RED) was created in conjunction with Aideen Barry’s solo exhibition The Song of the Bleeding Tree at Salzburger Kunstverein in 2023. The umbrella draws on a central, virus-like motif from one of the films in the exhibition, which fuses the mythological “evil eye” of Balor with the accelerated spectacle of contemporary capitalism and cryptocurrency economies.
In Irish mythology, Balor is a destructive supernatural figure whose singular gaze brings devastation. Often interpreted as an embodiment of the scorching sun and compared to mythic figures such as the Cyclops, Balor’s mythos evokes forces of overwhelming power and ruin—parallels that extend, in Barry’s reading, to humanity’s own capacity for systemic destruction.
