In the center of her artistic work, Johanna Kandl (*1954, in Vienna) traces the economic conditions and their effects on daily life. The artist reveals structures behind cultural-historical contexts, thematizing the conditions of production, the people behind them and the history of materials.
The works of Johanna Kandl have been presented internationally in numerous solo exhibitions, including at Ringturm (Vienna), Landesgalerie Niederösterreich (Krems), Belvedere (Vienna), Essl Museum (Klosterneuburg), Camera Austria (Graz), Dortmunder Kunstverein, Lentos Kunstmuseum (Linz), Galerie Six Friedrich Lisa Ungar (Munich), Kunstverein Ulm, GfZK – Gallery of Contemporary Art (Leipzig), Moravian Gallery (Brno), Salzburger Kunstverein, Fotohof (Salzburg), Forum Stadtpark (Graz), and Secession (Vienna). Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at institutions such as MUSA Vienna Museum, Kunsthalle Tübingen, Dom Museum (Vienna), MAK – Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna), Kunsthaus Graz, Albertina Modern (Vienna), Centre Pompidou (Metz), mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna, Belvedere 21 (Vienna), Landesgalerie Linz, Kunstraum Niederösterreich (Vienna), Kunsthalle Wien, BAWAG Contemporary (Vienna), MUHKA (Antwerp), Deichtorhallen (Hamburg), Galerie Nordenhake (Berlin), Frankfurter Kunstverein, Castello di Rivoli (Turin), Fotomuseum Winterthur, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Museum Morsbroich (Leverkusen), Kunsthalle Basel, MASS MoCA (North Adams), Generali Foundation (Vienna), Ursula Blickle Foundation (Kraichtal), Kunstverein München, and the Hayward Gallery (London), was a participant in the 9th Cairo Biennale and has realized numerous public art projects.
