Martha Jungwirth
Bedrohlich, aber heiter
2024
Lithography, unframed
80 x 60 cm
Ed 90
signed and numbered
For more than six decades, Martha Jungwirth (*1940, living and working in Vienna) has pursued a singular, deeply personal form of abstraction rooted in the body and in closely observed perceptions of the world. Her works exist beyond recognisable images – “before spoken language, before memory” – emerging in the act of painting itself, poised between chance and calculation.
Jungwirth describes her art as “like a diary, seismographic”. Personal encounters, travels, Greek mythology and political events become impulses recorded in paint and watercolour, with finger marks and scratches preserving her presence. Her vivid palette of fleshy pinks, blood reds and bruised magentas brings this lithograph to life, which is, as its title suggests, both menacing and cheerful.
This lithography was published on Martha Jungwirth´s project "Raising Flags" for museum in progress in the year 2024.
